The University Principal Preparation Initiative (UPPI) is a collaborative group made up of university-based principal preparation providers and members of the Kentucky Department of Education’s Principal Partnership Project (P3) team. Together, the UPPI group is dedicated to enhancing the quality of principal preparation across the state. By working closely, they aim to create the most effective and impactful learning experiences for educators pursuing principal certification. The ultimate goal of UPPI is to support both aspiring and current school leaders in becoming exceptional, well-equipped principals who are ready to meet the evolving demands of educational leadership.
Ongoing Work and Impact of the UPPI Team
Over the years, the University Principal Preparation Initiative (UPPI) team has been dedicated to strengthening leadership development across the state through research-based, collaborative action.
One of the team’s early accomplishments was recommending the adoption of the Professional Standards for Educational Leaders (PSEL) as Kentucky’s official principal standards. These standards now serve as the foundation for principal preparation programs and leadership practices statewide.
In addition to influencing policy, the UPPI group has made significant contributions to the field through the co-authorship of three books aimed at supporting school leaders: Service in the Trenches: School Principals Share True Stories of Servant Leadership, School Improvement: Let the Professional Standards for Educational Leaders Work for You and School Safety: True Stories and Solutions from School Leaders. These resources provide both theoretical grounding and practical guidance for current and future principals.
Currently, the UPPI team is developing a white paper that outlines a call to action for the future of principal preparation in Kentucky. Informed by research and educator surveys, this forthcoming document will offer strategic recommendations to further enhance the experiences of aspiring principals and ensure they are well-equipped to lead schools effectively in today’s dynamic educational landscape.
