Where do you teach? Duff-Allen Central Elementary

What subject(s)/grade(s) do you teach? 1st grade

How many years have you taught? 7

Why did you become a teacher? Teaching was not my initial plan. When my plans for a career fell through, I turned to teaching because I had been working in a daycare as my college work-study and fell in love with the children there. I did not have any brothers or sisters growing up and all my cousins were always older than me. It was until this time that I had no idea how much I enjoyed children. From this experience, I decided to pursue teaching.

What has been the best part of teaching that you didn’t expect when entering the profession? I expected to watch my students grow. What I did not expect was the change I would see in myself. I went from someone who was so unsure of herself, to a person with confidence and determination. Teaching gave me a passion and poise that I have never had before.

What is one thing you wish non-teachers knew about what you do? How much work goes into preparing lessons for students. The data analysis, strategies, instructional tools, and preparing lesson design. We think of each students’ needs when preparing lessons. We work hard to meet your kids’ needs.

What do you consider your greatest accomplishment as a teacher? My greatest accomplishment is developing readers! The science behind learning to read is incredible and the task is extremely difficult. We often take this aspect of teaching for granted.

Favorite thing to do when you aren’t teaching? My favorite thing to do when I am not teaching is to travel with my family.

If you could have a superpower, what would it be? My superpower would be to heal others and myself.
