Where do you teach? Monroe County Schools

What subject(s)/grade(s) do you teach? I’m the Digital Learning Coach for the Monroe County School District.

How many years have you taught? 9

Why did you become a teacher? Teaching is in my blood! My mother was a middle school teacher for 27 years and I saw the love and joy she shared with her students along the way. The passion she had for education was undeniable, and because of her, I realized this was a career field I wanted to become a part of!

What has been the best part of teaching that you didn’t expect when entering the profession? Relationships are hands down the best part of teaching that people don’t expect! Teaching is far more than just content. What makes teaching so rewarding is the unbreakable bonds you form with your students which last way past your 180 days with them.

What is one thing you wish non-teachers knew about what you do? I wish non-teachers knew how rewarding a career in education truly is. Seeing a child succeed is the greatest feeling in the world.

What do you consider your greatest accomplishment as a teacher? In my career as a teacher, two special moments stand out to me. A few years ago, I had the opportunity to present a model lesson and share my students with several KDE employees and the Commissioner of Education. I was so proud of my students for letting their light shine and showing how awesome they really are. I also enjoyed a wonderful moment with my BETA students as we became National Champions in Songfest and Performing Arts- Solo, Duo, Trio a couple of years ago. It was truly magical. BETA takes a great deal of hard work and dedication, so when the stars align and something like this occurs in the same year, it is almost impossible to contain all that excitement you have for your school and club. This was a highlight of my life and career that I will never forget.

Favorite thing to do when you aren’t teaching? Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my family. My two boys, ages 5 and 2, are a joy to be around! My husband and I enjoy spending time with them. Whether it’s playing ball outside or riding around on the farm, being together is our favorite part of the day.

If you could have a superpower, what would it be? If I were able to have one superpower, I would choose super speed. Being a mom in education keeps me quite busy. I think super speed could help me increase my productivity and stay on top of this busy life I lead.
