Occupation-based certification provides and avenue for individuals with professional experience in a career and technical education (CTE) field to earn a professional occupation-based teaching certification in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The following regulations outline the requirements for candidates seeking occupation-based certification:

  • 16 KAR 2:020 provides the minimum qualifications and requirements for candidates seeking occupation-based career and technical education (CTE) certification.
  • 16 KAR 6:020 establishes the assessment and passing score requirements for candidates seeking occupation-based certification.
  • 16 KAR 8:040 defines the rank classifications for occupation-based career and technical education teachers.
  • 16 KAR 9:040 Part-time adjunct instructor certificate.

Supporting Documentation

  • Verification of Experience form (CA3) – this form is for new hires in an occupation-based CTE area OR for an existing teacher who is seeking to add an occupation-based certification area to his/her current teaching certificate.
  • Renewal (CA2/CA1) – this form is for occupation-based teacher renewals AND also for occupation-based teachers seeking a rank change.
  • Adjunct (CA25) – this form is for part-time employment in occupation-based areas.
  • CTE Emergency Substitute – This form is for emergency substitute or full emergency certification in occupation-based areas where the instructor will be supervising students in a lab setting (must have 4 years of industry experience). Area Technology Centers will also use this form for certification of classroom-only substitutes.
