Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS): Preparing Future Teachers to Meet Every Student’s Needs
A strong understanding of Kentucky’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports (KyMTSS) is essential for preservice teachers. As outlined in KRS 158.305 through the Read to Succeed Act. Kentucky schools use an MTSS framework to identify students’ academic and behavioral needs early, provide evidence-based instruction and interventions, and monitor student progress to ensure every learner has the opportunity to succeed. This framework includes high-quality core instruction, universal screening, diagnostic assessment, targeted interventions, and ongoing progress monitoring.
For future elementary educators, understanding MTSS means being prepared to use assessment data to inform instruction, recognize when students need additional support, collaborate with families and school teams, and implement evidence-based practices that improve literacy outcomes. By entering the classroom with a solid foundation in KyMTSS, preservice teachers are better equipped to meet the diverse needs of learners and help all students become successful readers.
