When I was 16, I became a peer tutor in a Life Skills classroom. I met another student who was older than me who had Down Syndrome and was nonverbal. I learned more from her than I have anyone my entire life. Now I am a special education teacher and I try to bring meaning to my students’ learning by connecting it to their futures and how it can lead to a more independent life. I am also a proud mom to an awesome little boy with Autism. I live and breathe quite literally for children with special needs.
