A positive school culture plays a critical role in teacher retention. Educators are more likely to remain in schools where they feel respected, supported, connected to their colleagues, and valued as professionals. By fostering trust, recognition, professional growth, and meaningful opportunities for input, districts can create environments where teachers want to stay and thrive.
Educator well-being is closely linked to job satisfaction, effectiveness, and retention. Districts that intentionally support employee wellness by reducing workplace stressors, promoting work-life balance, and fostering positive school cultures are better positioned to retain high-quality educators and strengthen organizational commitment.
Kentucky educator exit survey data consistently indicate that workload and work-life balance are among the primary reasons educators leave their positions. While schools often respond to challenges by adding new initiatives, meetings, programs, or reporting requirements, district leaders may benefit from adopting a subtraction mindset by identifying tasks, processes, and expectations that can be reduced, streamlined, or eliminated. Protecting educators’ time allows them to focus on the work that matters most: teaching, learning, and supporting students. The following practices can help administrators support teachers’ workload and planning needs.
Many teachers leave not because they want to stop teaching, but because they see limited opportunities for growth while remaining in the classroom. Creating meaningful career pathways allows districts to retain experienced educators, build leadership capacity, and recognize expertise without requiring teachers to move into administration.
The resources provide practical guidance and examples for creating teacher leadership opportunities, differentiated career pathways, instructional coaching structures, and leadership development programs. These tools can help districts retain effective educators by recognizing expertise, expanding leadership opportunities, and building meaningful pathways for professional growth without requiring teachers to leave the classroom.
In Kentucky, each local board of education is required to adopt a district-wide Code of Acceptable Behavior and Discipline that applies to all schools in the district. The code establishes standards for student conduct and must address issues such as bullying, safety, and disciplinary expectations. The superintendent oversees implementation of the code district-wide, while each school principal is responsible for administering and implementing it within the school. School-Based Decision Making (SBDM) councils and school administrators typically select and implement the specific discipline and classroom management practices used at the school level. The following readings are intended to help administrators think through challenges associated with supporting the implementation of effective behavioral supports in school.
Competitive compensation is a critical component of attracting, supporting, and retaining high-quality educators. While salary remains important, many districts are finding success by offering enhanced compensation packages that include stipends, incentives, leadership opportunities, recognition programs, and expanded benefits. These strategies can help districts differentiate themselves in a competitive labor market while demonstrating a commitment to valuing educators’ contributions.
