Why I Teach
My family moved around a lot, so I didn’t get a deep connection with any specific teacher although I had some remarkable teachers. I loved watching my teachers and imagining it was me in front of the classroom. That never went away. I wanted to become a teacher so I could form those special relationships with my students and so my classroom could be the safe space I had needed as a child. I would say Anne Sullivan, Helen Keller’s lifelong teacher, was my greatest teacher inspiration because she alone took the time and effort to find a way to reach Helen in her silent darkness. I wanted to be that for someone, to peel back the layers and find best practices to reach the seemingly unreachable, and I continue to strive every single day to do just that. Teaching is the best job in the world.
