Where do you teach? Success Academy, Fayette County
What subject(s)/grade(s) do you teach? ELA and Math 6/7th grades
How many years have you taught? 8
Why did you become a teacher? I became a teacher to inspire others to dream big and work diligently to reach their goals. I want to see students meet their full potential even if their paths are not traditionally straight. I want to help them recognize their greatness and unleash their abilities. I became a teacher to be the guiding light for all students, but specifically for those that are lost or not yet ready to move mountains. I became a teacher to be the change for students like I once found myself to be.
What has been the best part of teaching that you didn’t expect when entering the profession? The best part of teaching that I did not expect to experience would be the collaboration with other knowledgeable individuals and the insights that I have gained from working alongside other amazing educators. Plus, the wisdom I gather from my students. It is amazing what young minds can do when challenged and encouraged.
What is one thing you wish non-teachers knew about what you do? I wish non-teachers could experience all of the effort that goes into a successful classroom. Not just the allotted contract time that we spend sharing our knowledge with students, but also the planning and worrying about our students before and after school hours, and the amount of effort we put into lessons to ensure that students meet mastery. The love and repertoire that we pour into our students to help them become well-rounded individuals.
What do you consider your greatest accomplishment as a teacher? My greatest accomplishment is the success of each of my students. Helping them become better learners and well-rounded individuals is the greatest achievement I have ever known as a teacher.
What is your favorite thing to do when you aren’t teaching? My favorite thing to do when I am not teaching is to spend time with my family. We love to tailgate for UK games, travel, and spend time with our friends. I also enjoy reading, hiking trails, and relaxing in the sunshine.
If you could have a superpower, what would it be? If I could have a superpower it would be mind control so that I could make learning easy and fun for all students. I would be able to see them having problems before any issues caused them to shut down and get frustrated and then change their perspective to ensure they met mastery of the content while enjoying and being invested in what they learn.
