Where do you teach? Norton Commons Elementary, Jefferson County
What subject(s)/grade(s) do you teach? 2nd grade
How many years have you taught? This is my 9th year teaching.
Why did you become a teacher? I became a teacher because I wanted to impact students’ lives positively. Being a positive role model in a student’s life can change their life forever. I want to help students be the best version of themselves and build their confidence. Seeing a student grow into their skin and take ownership of themselves is such a rewarding experience, and I want to be the person that helps make a difference in their life.
What has been the best part of teaching that you didn’t expect when entering the profession? The part of teaching I didn’t expect is the relationships I have built with students over the nine years I have taught. The first group of students I taught graduated from high school last year, and I had the opportunity to attend some of their graduation ceremonies and experience that with them. Knowing that I made a difference in someone’s life, extending past the time they were in my class, is the best feeling and part of being a teacher.
What is one thing you wish non-teachers knew about what you do? I wish non-teachers knew about the relationships I build with students and the emotional support that I become for students. Their struggle is my struggle, and I am always there to help them, even if it’s not during school hours.
What do you consider your greatest accomplishment as a teacher? My greatest accomplishment as a teacher is becoming a National Board Certified Teacher.
What is your favorite thing to do when you aren’t teaching? Outside of teaching, I love to spend time with my family. I have two children, Addie (4) and Jase (2). You can typically find us outside playing soccer or at our family farm enjoying time with one another. I love to bake, especially cobblers; they are my husband’s favorite. I also love spending time with my family on Sundays when we have weekly family dinners.
If you could have a superpower, what would it be? If I could have one superpower, it would be to read minds. As a teacher, it is crucial for me to build relationships with every student. I would love to read their mind to know precisely what is bothering them so I could help them solve their problems quickly.
