Where do you teach? Bell County
What subject(s)/grade(s) do you teach? Gifted and Talented, grades 4-8
How many years have you taught? 10
Why did you become a teacher? I had excellent teachers throughout my adolescence, but my mom had the greatest influence on me becoming a teacher. As a child, I got to see first-hand the hard work, dedication, and rewards of being a teacher. My mom was an amazing, passionate teacher who always went the extra mile for her students and I strive every day to be like her.
What has been the best part of teaching that you didn’t expect when entering the profession? The collegiality of everyone involved in education is surprising. The friendships that I have built over the years, even with educators from different states/districts, will last a lifetime. It is great to see so many people coming together to work toward a common goal of what is best for the kids.
What is one thing you wish non-teachers knew about what you do? I think a common myth is that teachers work 8-3. Even if all the grading and planning are finished, teachers still go home and worry about other people’s kids because we care.
What do you consider your greatest accomplishment as a teacher? I would have to say my greatest accomplishment as a teacher has been showing kids how fun learning can be. Everyone has a passion they can learn more about!
What is your favorite thing to do when you aren’t teaching? This answer will come as no surprise to anyone that knows me. I absolutely love to travel! Seeing, observing, and experiencing the world and other cultures are some of the best learning experiences.
If you could have a superpower, what would it be? This was the hardest question! I would like to have ALL the superpowers to at least try out once – flying, elemental manipulation, heat vision, invisibility, etc. all sound really cool. But if I had to name just one, I would have the superpower to heal. I don’t want to get too sentimental on this question, but the difference I could make in the life of others would be overwhelming.
