Initial National Board Certification lasts for five years. To maintain an active certification, NBCTS should complete the Maintenance of Certification process before their certification expires. The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) provides oversight for all NBCT certification and renewal requirements and processes. This Maintenance of Certification page provided by the NBPTS contains more specific information about maintaining certification.

While NBCT qualifies for a change in rank, it is not directly connected to your Kentucky teaching certificate. After submitting your initial rank change paperwork to the Kentucky Educator Credentialing System, all Maintenance of Certification paperwork should be submitted to your district’s human resources department.
